The 16 individually tuned bars form a C major scale with a range from c2 to a3. Alternatively, with the enclosed f#2, bb2 and f#3 sound plates, other scales can be formed, e.g. F major or G major. The additional tone plates can be stored in the resonance box itself to save space; a flap on the side of the resonance box makes this possible. This space-saving design philosophy also extends to the rest of the instrument. For example, there are mounts on the sides for the fold-out feet, so that several baton sticks can be stacked without the instruments slipping or the sound plates being stressed.
